Snglaphu Lake: Stunning High-Altitude Lake in North Sikkim

The Sanglaphu Cho (Lake) is a remarkable, newly discovered high-altitude glacial lake. It sits at an impressive elevation of 5,080 meters (about 16,670 feet). The lake is located near Lachung, about 55 km away   and approximately 5 km from Yumesamdong, also known as Zero Point.


Previously inaccessible for years, this “hidden gem” was opened to the public for the first time ever on April 30, 2024. Its history is tied to a mysterious, dramatic natural event, believed to be a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) originating from the nearby Gurudongmar Lake, which carved out the new lake.


This Lake is exceptionally beautiful; its clear blue waters are surrounded by high peaks, shining glaciers, and the reflection of the majestic, snow-capped Sanglaphu Mountain. The lake holds great religious importance for locals, often called the “Great Lake,” and its waters are used for blessings. Ecologically, it is an important water source, adding the Lachen Chu River and contributing to the flow of the Teesta River.


For tourists and tourism, the opening is an exciting development, offering a rare opportunity to experience a well-preserved location and begin on a spiritual journey. Its accessibility is expected to make it one of Sikkim’s top attractions, benefiting the local community. Visitors are advised to practice responsible tourism, obeying to guidelines such as avoiding single-use plastics and littering, and obtaining the necessary entry permits. The best time to visit is during the pleasant weather months of May, June, and October/September to November.
